About Ilse

The desire to work with colourful and tactile materials is in my blood. I learned to be creative as a small immigrant child playing with my mother’s knitting needles, crochet hooks, sewing needles and all of her scrap threads and fabrics. Living with my mother’s and grandmother’s beautiful Lithuanian folk art needlework inspired me to a lifelong interest in creating artistic fibre art works, but in my own contemporary style.

Since graduating from Alberta College of Art in 1980, I have been interested in a variety of artistic media and have created large and small tapestries working with recycled leather, corduroy, rayon, silk, nylon, cotton and linen fabrics.

My art involves the transformation of fabrics by employing a variety of traditional and modern quilting techniques to create complex, one-of-a-kind 2-D and 3-D fibre art collage constructions reflecting the theme of the work.
